Response by RBIDZ to Zululand Observer following a protest at Phase 1A estate

18 February 2021

Richards Bay: As the country and the province grapples with a trail of destruction caused by COVID-19, the Richards Bay IDZ can confirm that the demand for job opportunities continue to rise so are the requests directed to the company.

We are fully aware that the number of job opportunities will never satisfy the demand and in this regard, we commit to continue with our efforts to attract foreign direct investments to the Zone and to remain the catalyst for job creation and entrepreneurship development.

In the recent engagement with the protestors at one of our estates, it was established that the protestors were members of the North Coast Workers Forum (NCWF) who refer themselves as job seekers. The protest was motivated by the demand for job opportunities.

The RBIDZ has not received any written letter of demand, however like any members of the community they will be given a platform to engage the company.

To date, there has been no material act of violence reported, however the matter is closely monitored to safeguard employees and operations of the company.

We remain aware that the world over companies are shedding jobs and KwaZulu Natal has also been affected but the investment projects commencing construction are promising a better future for our region in terms of job creation and other value chain opportunities.

In conclusion, to ensure that we remain a haven for foreign direct investments it is important that peace and stability is a safety net in the area. It is a well-known factor that investors tend to prioritise social stability when choosing investment destinations.
