The Ntambanana sports field came alive with energy and aspiration recently, as over 600 Grade 12 learners from Mgezeni Secondary and Mningi High schools participated in a dynamic and informative Career Expo. The event was hosted by the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) in partnership with the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA), with an aim of equipping learners with vital career information and developmental opportunities offered by both entities. The Career Expo formed part of the RBIDZ’s ongoing efforts of bridging the gap between education and economic participation, particularly for youth in rural areas. The learners were introduced to a wide range of prospects including bursary opportunities, internship programmes, learnership and entrepreneurial pathways, and the most in-demand careers across various sectors, that learners can align to.
The highlight of the event was the keynote address by Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Mr. Velenkosini Hlabisa, who encouraged learners to embrace the opportunities presented to them and prepare themselves for an evolving and competitive global economy.
“This expo is a declaration that the future belongs to those who are prepared, supported and inspired,” said Minister Hlabisa, putting emphasis on government’s commitment to youth empowerment, particularly in marginalised communities. He urged learners to remain focused and dedicated to their studies, emphasising that education is the key to unlocking a better future. Drawing from his own life journey and experiences, he encouraged them to persevere through challenges and make the most of every opportunity presented to them.
He also delivered a strong moral message to the learners, cautioning them against alcohol consumption, substance abuse, and early dating-; all of which he warned could derail their academic journey and future goals.
The RBIDZ Chief Executive Officer; Mr. Thabane Zulu gave a presentation on the mandate of the RBIDZ and how it contributes to youth empowerment; particularly along socio-economic development. He shared words of encouragement and groundbreaking developments within the RBIDZ, including projects worth over R251 billion in energy, metals beneficiation, agro- processing, chemicals, and technology sectors, all aimed at stimulating job creation and skills development.
Zulu further emphasised on the importance of scarce skills careers that are also in high demand and aligned with the evolving world markets. These skills are increasingly imperative as more specialised projects are anticipated to locate within the Zone.
As the event formed part of the Nelson Mandela Month commemoration, Zulu reiterated the organisation’s commitment to education and inclusivity. “This initiative honours the legacy of Nelson Mandela by investing in education and ensuring that no learner is left behind,” he stated.
The expo featured a vibrant exhibition area where learners engaged directly with entities, industries and institutions offering support and pathways for further education and training, such as the Central Application Office (CAO), uMfolozi TVET College, University of Zululand, Boston City Campus, KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), KZN Economic Regulatory Authority (KZN ERA), KZN Sharks Board , Mondi, Council for the Built Environment (CBE) and South African Council for Quantity Surveyors (SACQS). These organisations provided learners with information on application processes, funding options, opportunities and the qualifications most sought after in today’s job market.
Speaking on behalf of the principals from both participating schools, Mr. Harris Khuzwayo expressed sincere appreciation to the RBIDZ for bringing such a meaningful and impactful programme to their community.
Khuzwayo noted that while similar efforts are often made, they are not always sufficient and initiatives like this make a real difference; and it makes a greater impact when learners hear information directly from the organisations, indicating that this kind of exposure reinforces what they teach and inspires learners to dream bigger.
Through initiatives like the Career Expo, the RBIDZ continues to play a meaningful role in advancing youth and community development by creating access to information, support and tangible economic opportunities.
